One of Cape Town's most remarkable neighbourhoods

The Lochiel Smallholdings (LSH) are one of Cape Town's most remarkable neighbourhoods: a hub of farms, small businesses, jobs, and integration across racial and economic lines. But the City of Cape Town's new Local Spatial Development Framework (LSDF) plans to acquire our land, displace our families, and replace this thriving community with temporary relocation areas.

This repeats the same old apartheid-style tactics of uprooting people instead of building real, integrated solutions. We are not against housing. We are against forced displacement and the destruction of communities that work. Cape Town must choose better.

Why it matters

Jobs At Risk

380+

For mostly Masiphumelele residents, will vanish.

Local Economy

R50 million

Per year in business activity, gone.

Spatial Justice

Vulnerable Communities

Are sacrificed, while wealthy areas remain untouched.

The City's plan is not just about Lochiel Smallholdings. It's about the kind of Cape Town we want to build.

Rural communities on the edge of township and suburb are a source of ecological resilience and economic strength. The residents of LSH want to:

  • Expand and preserve our local heritage, business, and agricultural environment.
  • Find innovative housing solutions that don't repeat apartheid's mistakes.
  • Build an example of true integration for Cape Town and the country.
